Preface

This paper is written for the course of Telematics, that is given by Leo Remijn at Tilburg University in the fall of 2000. The idea was to pick a topic of interest that has, of course, something to do with Telematics (multimedia, communication protocols, network connections, etc). The authors of this paper were both interested in the concept of mobile Internet. That is, the ability of electronically being connected to a larger network wherever you are. There are numerous obstacles before "mobile-Internet-ideas" can be deployed in large (commercially interesting) numbers. The speed of the connection for example gives many pioneers in this area a major headache. Within a couple of months (years?), this obstacle will be behind us but another one pops up: the practical problem of the screen that is available on most portable devices. Most of these screens are so small, that some conversion has to take place before normal Internet information (HTML-pages) can be seen on portable devices.

Since both of us thought it would be interesting to learn more in this area, we decided to pick this topic as our subject for the paper. It proved that it is not easy to find concrete information on mobile Internet since the topic is so new and a lot of information becomes obsolete within an incredible small amount of time. However, we hope to have succeeded in writing an interesting paper that contains diverse information on mobile Internet.
